Theory belongs
in rehearsal.

A practical framework for junior high and high school choirs. Keep your repertoire at the center and weave in one useful discovery at a time.

Your daily micro-structure

  1. 01 / Review
60–90 seconds to reconnect with yesterday.
  2. 02 / Discover
3–5 minutes of listening, singing or score work.
  3. 03 / Apply
Sing the phrase again. Notice what changed.

Bring a keyboard, your current scores and a whiteboard. Adapt the pace to your rehearsal calendar; repeat activities on non-rehearsal days or the next time you meet.

01

Week 01 / Ears first

Hear the interval. Sing it with intention.

Echo seconds, thirds, fourths and fifths. Hunt for them in your score, then listen for beats as your choir tunes a unison into harmony.

02

Week 02 / Harmony unlocked

Build the chord, not just your part.

Assign roots, thirds and fifths to sections. Hear major and minor triads, then find the V–I and IV–I resolutions already hiding in your repertoire.

03

Week 03 / Read with confidence

Make the next measure less of a mystery.

Clap back repertoire rhythms, map the form and sight-read four to eight measures. Let students explain one musical discovery to the group.

04

Week 04 / Put it together

Take the aha moment into the music.

Annotate a score, revisit a tricky tuning spot and compare classroom recordings. Finish with a five-minute warm-up habit and a goal for next month.

Not in a choir? The same ideas travel.

Explore intervals, chord progressions and ear training as a songwriter, producer or self-taught musician. Hear it first. Understand it next. Make it yours.
